RESEARCH: WORK IN PROGRESS

Summary of the research activities (Fall 2012 - Spring 2013):
University of Bologna: we are carrying out the protocol n. 2 “Teaching to improvise” in the Primary School of Casalecchio di Reno (Bologna), with the aim to verify if the MIROR-Improvisation is necessary and sufficient to improve the children's abilities to improvise, in solo and in duet. Music analysis of the improvisation will be realised in collaboration with the team of Athens. An exploratory study in music therapy setting is being carried out with two groups of 6-8 years old children, in collaboration with Music Space-Italy (member of the Advisory and Liaison Board). A focus group with university students has been organised to explore the pedagogical conceptions developed in the context of reflexive interaction. Classroom activities with MIROR-Improvisation and MIROR-Composition are being carried out in the School of Music, Imola (Bologna), with young musicians 6-9 years old. Several exploratory studies have been realized with the MIROR-Body Gesture and children 6-8 years old, in collaboration with Mousiké (ALB member). Collaboration is being carried out with Dr Luc Nijs, IPEM, University of Ghent (ALB member), about an experimental protocol with children and the MIROR-Improvisation. SONY: we are working on the interface of MIROR-Improvisation and MIROR-Composition. University of Genoa: we are working in the implementation of the MIROR- Body Gesture and of its interface.

University of Göteborg: we studied the MIROR- Composition with 7-8 years old children both at home and in the schools. We underlined the basic concerns on the reflections and the skills for the composition. We carried out a study testing the Potter (MIROR- Body Gesture) with 6 children of 8 years old and an interview followed the activities. A second experiment has been realized with the Potter and BeSound (MIROR-Body Gesture) with six children of 7 years old. A stimulated recall interview has been conducted one week after the experiment.

National and Kapodistrian University of Athens: we carried out, in collaboration with the team of the University of Exeter, a research studies in music school with 10 pianist children of 8-10 years old and the MIROR-Improvisation and we realized a pre-post test. Classroom activities with the MIROR-Improvisation and MIROR-Composition have been carried out in a class of 25 children of 8 years old, where mostly of them were non musicians, we explored the role of the teacher, the task and the class's organization in a real school setting. Activities with MIROR-Improvisation were carried out in therapeutic setting with six adult patients; we observed the impact of the MIROR on the patients' perception of self, external reality and musical discourse.

University of Exeter: we carried out, in collaboration with SONY, a style recognition test with children. A small usability test has been realized with some early years’ music specialists. In collaboration with the team of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, we carried out a research study in music school with pianist children of 8-10 years old and the MIROR-Improvisation proposing a pre and post-test. In collaboration with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the University of Göteborg we realized activities with MIROR-Composition in real school contexts. Jonathan Savage (Manchester Metropolitan University) will carry out a study with the MIROR-Composition with high course students.

COMPEDIA: we are working on the MIROR Wiki portal and on the MIROR Platform Survey.
